The Free Second Opinion — How It Works and When It's Worth Asking

If another company has quoted you a full HVAC replacement, we'll come look at what's in your basement and tell you honestly whether that quote holds up. No pressure to buy from us, no fee if you don't. The goal is a homeowner who makes a real decision.

Why second opinions exist

HVAC diagnostics have judgment calls. A cracked heat exchanger, a "leaking coil," or a compressor "on the way out" can all be genuine — or they can be a technician upselling a mid-life system. Both happen in Des Moines. The difference is worth thousands.

A second opinion is a licensed technician looking at the same equipment with the same tools and telling you what they see. When two independent techs land on the same call, that's confidence. When they disagree, that's a homeowner who just avoided a wrong repair or a premature replacement.

What we actually do on a second-opinion call

  • Read the first quote. We look at what was diagnosed and what was recommended, in writing.
  • Test the equipment. Combustion analysis on the furnace side, refrigerant pressures and superheat / subcool on the AC side, static pressure on the ductwork, capacitors under load — real numbers on paper.
  • Show you the readings. Not "we think it's fine" — the actual meter, the actual number, and how it compares to the manufacturer spec.
  • Tell you the shortest honest path. Sometimes that's "the first quote was right." Sometimes it's a $200 repair. Sometimes it's a targeted replacement of one component. And sometimes we agree it's time for a new system — and can quote it in a range you can compare.

When a second opinion doesn't apply

If the system is actively down in a hard freeze and the fastest path back to heat is a same-day fix, that's an emergency call — not a second-opinion visit. Call us at for emergency service and we'll sort the paperwork after.

We also don't quote replacements sight-unseen based on the other company's PDF. Every real quote comes from actually being on-site.

The honest fine print

The second-opinion visit itself is free. If you approve a repair on the spot, standard shop rates apply from that point. If you decide to take the first company's advice after our visit, that's fine — no pressure calls, no follow-up sales sequence.

We track second-opinion outcomes internally. It's how we hold ourselves honest — if we ever start looking like the up-sell company, we want to see it in our own numbers first.

Common questions

How do I request a second opinion? +
Call us or use the free-second-opinion request page. Have the other company's written quote ready and we'll schedule the visit.
Do you charge if you find nothing wrong? +
No — that's the whole point. If the first quote was accurate and there's nothing else to say, we go home. No fee.
Is the second opinion valid on any brand? +
Yes. We service every major residential brand. Our second-opinion process is the same on a Trane, a Carrier, a Lennox, or an Amana.
