Spring AC Prep Checklist for Iowa Homes

• Replace the furnace filter. After a full heating season it's almost always due. A clean filter is the single cheapest AC upgrade.
• Clear the outdoor unit. Rake leaves and grass clippings out of the coil. Trim shrubs back at least 2 feet. Rinse the coil with a garden hose from the inside out — no pressure washer.
• Level the pad. Iowa freeze-thaw cycles tip concrete pads. A unit at a slight angle is fine; a leaning one strains refrigerant lines.
• Check the condensate drain. The PVC line leaving the furnace should be open. A cup of white vinegar poured in at the cleanout clears bacterial slime that clogs it mid-summer.
• Set the thermostat to cool with fresh batteries. Confirm it's actually calling for cooling — the outdoor unit should start within a minute or two.

A real spring tune-up covers what a homeowner can't safely reach: refrigerant charge, static pressure, capacitor microfarad reading, contactor condition, blower amp draw, and coil cleaning at the evaporator side of the system. • Unit hums but doesn't spin — usually a failed start capacitor. A $30 part; running it hard damages the compressor.
• Ice on the copper line — restricted airflow or low charge. Turn off and call for service.
• Warm air from vents — could be a dirty filter, a tripped breaker, or a failing capacitor. Check the easy things first.
• Buzzing or rattling from the outdoor unit — loose panel or debris. A twenty-second look under the cap prevents a bigger problem.
